Houston – Dräger announced it will unveil patented technology that for the first time can alarm when the combined smoke-borne gases HCN and CO, known as the ‘toxic twins’ are present. The company will also demonstrate a new hands-free team commmunication system and live burns on demand at its mobile trainer.
“Based on more than one hundred years of serving firefighters in North America and around the world, Dräger continually creates new technologies to advance firefighter safety,” said Lothar Thielen, President and Regional CEO, Dräger North America. “This year at FDIC, we are excited to present our latest innovations, including our patented ‘toxic twins’ combined alarm technology and our most requested SCBA Packages, for which we will offer a free upgrade to the 2018 NFPA standards."
Confidence Maze tests agility
Back by popular demand, the Dräger booth will feature its Confidence Maze. “This structure gives firefighters the opportunity to try out our SCBAs in a real-world situation and test their agility by crawling through tight places,” explains Thielen. Firefighters who complete the maze can have their photo taken and posted to social media, and receive a free 2018 Dräger Limited Edition Challenge coin.
New technology delivers the ‘Toxic Twins’ combined alarm
Two of the most lethal smoke-borne gases are hydrogen cynanide (HCN) and carbon monoxide (CO), which are more lethal in combination than they are individually. To date, the patented combined alarm technology in the Dräger X-am 5000 gas detection device is the only device which gives an appropriate alarm when both gases are present simultaneously.
Detect with Confidence
During FDIC, Dräger will present the newest edition to its gas detection family, the Dräger X-am 8000. This compact, light-weight device detects up to seven toxins, flammable gases, vapors and oxygen all at once, and can be operated with a single hand, leaving one hand free for additional tasks.
Team Talk enables hands-free communication
Dräger will also demonstrate the new voice-activated Team Talk feature of its FPS-COM 7000 system. Team Talk lets firefighters communicate hands-free with team members in full personal protective equipment (PPE) as easily as if they were on the phone.
Live burns on demand: real fire, real smoke
Outside, Dräger will demonstrate its propane-fueled Mobile Live Fire Training Unit. “Hands-on training is essential for firefighters,” explains Thielen. “But because of today’s stricter fire codes, there are fewer opportunities to gain experience by fighting real fires. Our mobile fire training system enables real-world training on demand – whenever and wherever it’s needed.”
Collecting firefighter patches on behalf of 12-year-old battling cancer
At the at Dräger booth, the company will be collecting firefighter patches on behalf of Mileena Painter of St. Clair County, Alabama, a 12-year old girl who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia this past August. Mileena, whose dad is a firefighter and mom a paramedic, is collecting badges from around the world as part of a school project to show her appreciation for those who work in these professions. She plans on keeping the patches and sewing them together into a quilt.
Other technologies shown in the Dräger booth include:
- Maintenance-free, wearable Dräger Pac single gas detectors that clip on to protect firefighters against toxic gases
- NFPA-compliant thermal imaging cameras that provide life-saving information when fire, smoke and darkness hide unseen dangers
